What is the difference between CBDa and CBD?

First of all, we would have to understand that, all major cannabinoids present in cannabis and hemp first develop as cannabigerolic acid (CBGa).

From there, plant enzymes unique to each cannabis strain convert the CBGa into some varying combination of the three major cannabinoid precursor compounds:

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa)
Cannabichromenic acid (CBCa)
Cannabidiolic acid (CBDa)

Conversion of CBGa to CBDa to cannabidiol CBD)

Once CBDa has been formed, it’s then converted into CBD by thermal decarboxylation, whereby heat causes the molecule to lose its acidic carboxyl group. CBDa is essentially the raw acidic precursor of CBD.

Despite CBDa being abundant in raw cannabis, because it usually tends to be decarboxylated into CBD by exposure to heat (smoking, vaping, etc) prior to being ingested, it makes it very difficult for consumers to gain direct access to this particular cannabinoid. This is why Clearly Soluble is so beneficial to consumers that want the CBDa benefits, but want to avoid having to use topical creams, tinctures or drink raw cannabis juice.

Despite CBDa having up to 19x more bioavailability than CBD has, up until now, it hasn’t been as widely used due to the expense of stabilizing it which has historically been done via ethanol or critical Co2 extraction processes. Our patent-pending water washed extraction process, which produces the CBDa for our beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complex powders, is substantially more cost-efficient and still produces reliable quality and quantity.

What CBD/CBDa Water Soluble Products do we offer?

We offer three different water-soluble powders; CBD, CBDa and a CBD+CBDa which are all encapsulated in the beta-cyclodextrin molecule, making them 100% soluble, tasteless and odourless. These unique characteristics make them perfect for the F&B industry, as well as for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry.

Breweries especially love our products, due to the fact that beta-cyclodextrin occurs naturally in beer; they don’t have to alter their formulas when adding it to their batches and our powders withstand flash pasteurization, which means it won´t decarboxylate any further to preserve the CBDa formula.

Our products are all THC free, GMP certified, Kosher and Organic Certified.  They all have 100% “seed to shelf” traceability.

Clearly Soluble Products:

CBD Broad-Spectrum 15-18% Potency Water Soluble Powder
CBD + CBDa Mix Broad-Spectrum 15-18% Potency Water Soluble Powder
CBDa Broad-Spectrum 15-18% Potency Water Soluble Powder

Dosage Example

Let’s say you wanted to add a 16 mg dose of CBD to your 33 cl can/bottle of lemonade, beer etc.
At a potency percentage of 16%, 1kg would add 16mg dose to 10,000 cans/bottles.

What safety, quality assurance, and testing standards does Extract implement?

We provide a Certificate of Analysis to verify quality and potency for all of our products, which are manufactured using safe ingredients in facilities complaint by FDA standards and are regularly audited for quality assurance.

Our products are also GMP, Organic and Kosher certified, which means that all of our raw materials and facilities have gone through rigorous testing and inspections to ensure no THC, pesticide residues, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and pathogens are present.

Do Extract offer any products containing THC, now or in the future?

No, at present we don’t have plans to offer products containing THC.

How do I get samples for testing?

We offer 5-gram samples free of charge.  Simply request an Order Form for the samples you need or download the form via our website here and email us your completed form to [email protected]

Please note that sample potency may vary very slightly to the final product.

What extraction process do you use?

We use our water wash extraction facility that we developed with proprietary technology.  Our extraction process only uses water and no solvents in the extraction process.

What is the entourage effect?

The Entourage Effect in a nutshell, is the theory that various cannabis compounds work together to create unique effects and benefits when consumed.

Can I still obtain the “Entourage Effect” without the TCH component?

Our customers, that have established their brand around the “Entourage Effect”, particularly like our product which contains the broad-spectrum CBD and CBDa mix, as this combination helps to mimic the “Entourage Effect”, but without the THC. Many of our UK customers feel that it will be more difficult in the future to work with full spectrum products after the Novel Foods act goes into full effect.

Are there incidences whereby CBD gets absorbed into the aluminium, glass or plastic drinks container?

No, this does not happen with our products. CBD/CBDa is encapsulated inside the beta cyclodextrin molecule, making it virtually impossible for the CBD to come out of its encapsulation/solution and become absorbed by the container, be it plastic, aluminium or glass.

What is THC?

THC which stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of at least 113 cannabinoids identified in cannabis.

Pate, David W. (1994). “Chemical ecology of Cannabis”. Journal of the International Hemp Association. 2 (29): 32–37.

THC, along with its double bond isomers and their stereoisomers, is one of only three cannabinoids scheduled by the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances (the other two are dimethylheptylpyran and parahexyl).

Mazzoccanti, G.; Ismail, O. H.; D’Acquarica, I.; Villani, C.; Manzo, C.; Wilcox, M.; Cavazzini, A.; Gasparrini, F. (2017). “Cannabis through the looking glass: chemo- and enantio-selective separation of phytocannabinoids by enantioselective ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography”

THC, is the marijuana plant’s primary component for causing psychoactive effects – in other words, the part of the plant responsible for getting you high. THC was first discovered and isolated by Bulgarian-born chemist Raphael Mechoulam in Israel in 1964. It was found that, when you smoke, tetrahydrocannabinol is absorbed into the bloodstream and travels to the brain, attaching itself to the naturally-occurring cannabinoid receptors – known as the endocannabinoid system – located in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and basal ganglia. These are the parts of the brain responsible for thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and movement.

clearly soluble - questions

What is Clearly Soluble?

Clearly Soluble is a truly revolutionary product that uses a water-wash extraction process to produce Cyclodextrin/Cannabinoid inclusion complex powders that are 100% soluble, tasteless and odourless!

When mixed with water, the complex forms a true solution wherein the solvent and solute consist of only one phase. The solution will remain homogeneous and will not separate over any period of time. The solution is impervious to standard filtration and centrifugation. A cyclodextrin complex solution transmits light and looks transparent. Truly water soluble by definition!

What is an inclusion complex?

A molecular compound in which another compound is spatially enclosed. In this example, the guest molecule is a cyclic sugar (cyclodextrin) that is hydrophilic on the exterior. The centre of the cyclodextrin molecule forms a lipophilic cavity into which the hydrophobic CBD or CBDA molecules is inserted forming a non-covalent bond. The solubility characteristics of the inclusion complex are primarily dictated by the exterior of the molecule which is hydrophilic (water-loving).

Figure 1 Graphically illustrates the inclusion complex phenomenon:

How does the inclusion complex interact with water?

Because inclusion complexes utilize non-covalent binding, they exist in equilibrium with the surrounding solvent (water). CBDa which has some intrinsic water solubility (ca. 1 mg/ml @ pH=7) shifts more CBDa into solution than CBD which will remain more included.

Is Beta-cyclodextrin something new?

No, the beta cyclodextrin molecule processing system has been widely used across the pharmaceutical industry for a very long time, and in products commonly used that lack bio availability and/or solubility, like ibuprofen, omeprazole and many other chemicals.

Beta cyclodextrin molecule processing has simply been used and adapted to create the same process, but using cannabinoids.

Does the beta-cyclodextrin molecule process enhance bioavailability and better absorption into the system?

Yes, beta-cyclodextrin enhances the bioavailability by increasing the solubility, dissolution and/or permeability. The increase of permeability allows for availability at the surface of the biological barrier, from where it partitions into the membrane without disrupting the lipid layers of the barrier.  (Kim EY, Gao ZG, Park JS, Lee H, Han K. CD complex in poloxamer gel for ophthalmic delivery. Int J Pharm. 2005;233:159. [PubMed[Google Scholar])

Do Clearly Soluble products fully dissipate? Is the consistency equal from top to bottom?

Yes, our Clearly Soluble products are 100% soluble and once in solution, they will never come out of solution. The solution will remain homogeneous and will not separate over any period of time. The solution is impervious to standard filtration and centrifugation. A cyclodextrin complex solution transmits light and therefore looks transparent. Truly water-soluble by definition!

Where can I buy Clearly Soluble products?

We are US based, but deliver our products worldwide, unless your country or state has restrictions.

For UK and European deliveries, we have obtained the UK Binding Tariff Information decision (Notice 600) via HMRC to avoid additional tariffs or import duties.

Have Clearly Soluble applied for Novel Foods licence?

Yes, we have been working for many, many months on the process and uploading of the required documentation onto the FSA’s platform. We will have our dossier ready for application when the FSA opens up the application acceptance stage of the process in January 2021 and have confirmation of application acceptance well before the deadline of March 31st 2021.

What is the shelf life for Clearly Soluble products, and what is the typical shelf life in a finished good, assuming correct processing?

Years.

What are the key benefits of using Clearly Soluble CBD/CBDa powders?

As our Clearly Soluble CBD/CBDa powders are 100% soluble, tasteless and odourless, there is absolutely no need to add harsh masking agents, which you would normally have to use to disguise the odour, taste and consistency of a CBD oil and which also means that you would not have to alter your formula.

  • It simply is an additional ingredient to add your product without the need to alter your formula.
  • Thermal stability and shelf life of CBDa is dramatically enhanced by cyclodextrin inclusion. Using the water-soluble inclusion complex in brewing, cooking or candy making allows for infusion with little decarboxylation. We have demonstrated that at 1000 C decarboxylation is only a few percent in the first hour and never exceeds 15% over 24 hours!
  • The water washed patent, which only uses water and no solvents to stabilise CBDa molecules, allows for the production costs to be brought down drastically, as opposed to using ethanol or critical CO2.
  • Our CBD and CBDa water soluble products are never at any stage an oil product, which allows our products to have the revolutionary soluble, tasteless and odourless characteristics, making them the perfect ingredient for the food and beverages industry as well as for cosmetics industry.
  • Using Clearly Soluble water extracted CBD/CBDa products within topical creams for the cosmetics industry (unless oil/fat based), has been proven to be absorbed better by the epidermis in comparison to oils.
  • Bioavailability studies have been done on CBD and CBDa whereby CBDa has proven to be about 19 times more bioavailable than CBD (Jones et al., published in the 24th Annual Symposium of the International Cannabinoid Research Society 2014).
  • Our Clearly Soluble products are cost dense products due to their higher market comparable potency of 15-18% rather than the standard 10%.
What products could truly benefit from the 100% solubility, tastelessness and odourless characteristics of our CBDa/CDB products range?

The list is endless!

Almost every food you can think of has water or a powder component to it, with the exception of fresh produce and meats. Which means you could add our products to almost any food or drink you can think of. The list is endless!

  1. Infuse other powders and dry goods
  2. Cosmeceuticals: Creams, salves and roll-on
  3. Edibles: Baked goods, processed foods, candies, confectioneries, dry soups, etc…
  4. Drink additives such as creamers and sweeteners
  5. Beverages: Instant drinks, coffees, teas, beers, (beta-cyclodextrin is found in beer), energy drinks, smoothies,
  6. Effervescent tablets
  7. Infused honey
  8. Gel caps and nutraceuticals

How and when does Clearly Soluble get added to production?

Clearly Soluble can be seamlessly integrated into any production process, whether small batch or commercial scale, due to it being 100% soluble, tasteless an odourless and because of these characteristics, not having to alter the formula.

We have a dedicated team to support all of our clients in the manufacturing process and to guide them each step of the way. We pride ourselves in providing the best customer service possible to our clients.

Dosage Example

Let’s say you wanted to add a 16 mg dose of CBD to your 33 cl can/bottle of lemonade, beer etc.
At a potency percentage of 16%, 1kg would add 16mg dose to 10,000 cans/bottles.

Have you done any 'heat robustness' tests on your Clearly Soluble powders?

Yes, thermal stability and shelf life of our CBDa is dramatically enhanced by cyclodextrin inclusion. Using our water-soluble inclusion complex in cooking, brewing or candy making, even with flash pasteurization, allows for infusion with little decarboxylation of the CBDa. We have demonstrated that at 100 C, decarboxylation is only a few percent in the first hour and never exceeds 15% over 24 hours!

Our CBD water soluble is completely stable to above 100 C.  Same goes for CBDa water soluble powder when it’s not in solution.

What type of products are Clearly Soluble not suitable for?

It is not suitable as an ingredient in final products that are oil/fat-based and use oils to dissolve cannabinoids, aromas, or other ingredients.

What safety, quality assurance, and testing standards does Clearly Soluble implement?

We provide a Certificate of Analysis to verify quality and potency for all of our Clearly Soluble products, which are manufactured using safe ingredients in facilities complaint by FDA standards and are regularly audited for quality assurance.
